Verse 9 of this chapter, the young friends ask the Bride why she loves her Bridegroom so much. People are moved by those who are burning for Jesus. Why are you so on fire for Him? The Bride imparts her fire to them in her response about the beauty of Jesus. She begins with the confession: My lover is dazzling (radiant) and chief among ten thousand. (Superior to anyone else)!!! And she shares 10 attributes about the beauty of Jesus: "His head is like the finest gold" SoS 5:11 His head represents HIs Sovereign Lordship over all creation. It is like finest (highest quality & excellence) gold which speaks of Jesus' Deity. "...Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knew should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father", Philippians 2:9-11. "His locks are wavy and black as a raven" SoS 5:11 Locks that are wavy & black speaks to the vitality and vigorous energy and zeal Jesus has. Jesus is eternally full of zeal for God and His people. "His eyes are like doves..." SoS 5:12 The eyes speak to His ability to see; His omniscience (infinite knowledge, wisdom, discernment). He sees the beginning from the end; nothing escapes Jesus' gaze. His eyes being like doves represents His singleness of vision. "His cheeks are like beds of spices yielding perfume" SoS 5:13 Cheeks are the window to the soul. Jesus' emotional life if like a bed of spices~ a diversity of fragrance of His affections for His bride. "His lips are like lilies dripping with myrrh" SoS 5:13 Lips speak to His Word which is sweet and pure like lilies. Dripping with myrrh (a burial spice) speaks to the price Jesus pays on the cross~ for His bride. "And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death~ even death on a cross", Philippians 2:8) "His hands are rods of gold set with beryl" SoS 5:14 Hands refers to the works/activities of Jesus. He has all-power~ omnipotent. He can accomplish whatever He wants! His power can never be increased for He possesses ALL power. There is nothing that anyone on earth can do to stop what Jesus will accomplish. "His body is carved ivory inlaid with sapphires" SoS 5:14 Body can be translated "belly or torso". This speaks of deep feelings or tender compassion of Jesus. His compassion is rare like ivory. Lamentations 3:22-23 "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning, great is your faithfulness." "His legs are pillars of marble set on bases of pure gold" SoS 5:15 Legs refer to his walk~ the forward motion He is moving in. Jesus' ways are strong, lovely, established and permanent. "His countenance is like Lebanon, choice as its cedars" SoS 5:15 Jesus' countenance speaks of His impartation of GLORY to His people. The priests prayed for God to manifest His light and glory to be manifest upon the people of Israel. "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace" Numbers 6:24-26 "His mouth is sweetness itself..." SoS 5:16 Mouth is associated with intimacy (just as we saw in the beginning of this song, "Kiss me with the kisses of his mouth (word)" and Jesus speaks of the Bride's mouth in SoS 4:3, "Her mouth is lovely"~ God declares our love as lovely to Him. Intimacy with God is most sweet because nothing delights the Bride more than this. And nothing delights the Bridegroom King that intimacy with His bride. " The bride ends this section by declaring "He is altogether lovely! This is my beloved and my friend..." SoS 5:16. This is her summary statement about her Bridegrooom King!
