Mother’s Day is approaching quickly and I want to give a “shout out” to my amazing mother. I saw the reality of her amazingness (my own word) last week when my sister and I went to spend some time at our parent’s house….shopping is the usual activity when we visit Minneapolis area. However, this time, we were on assignment~ to take care of our mom who was having cataract surgery and to help with the care of our dad. What I witnessed for the week I was there was indescribable. I have a new name for my mom~ superhero. All she needs is a cape! My dad’s health has declined and my mom has chosen to be his caregiver….and care she does. It is very hard to see a parent, especially dad~ the one who is strong, carries authority, protection, defender of the family~ slip away. My superhero mom went to her surgery and by the next day was back to doing all the usual activities….taking care of my dad; taking care of all the finances; taking care of all the household chores~ inside and outside; preparing all meals; taking all phone calls & all mail; making all the decisions about everything concerning their future; daily picking up all necessary medications, etc.; being available at all times for my dad; getting him to exercise or to even want to get dressed for the day. After all the years of mom being mom to Jana & I, she is now taken the role of nurturing my dad. I spent the days helping my mom with the care of my dad and I was exhausted at the end of the day! And I am 30 years younger than my mom!!! She has a servant’s heart~ a woman of sacrifice. My mom has laid down her life for her friend…that is why she is a superhero. The definition of superhero is one who has extraordinary strength and will sacrifice for the good of others. She has lived well her vows of marriage to my dad~ a marriage of 56 years….”in sickness and health; for better or worse”. She honors the husband of her youth. What an example to my sister and I. What an example for all couples. In a day of wanting to be “happy” and “comfortable” , where self-centered living abounds, she has raised the water level for us. She has modeled unconditional love~ a love that does not expect anything in return, but does the best for the object of one’s affection. On this Mother’s Day, I want to say thanks mom. “The Lord blesses the home of the righteous,” Proverbs 3:33
