Song of Solomon 4:1-5 ~ The Divine Romance

In these 5 verses of chapter 4, Jesus speaks on 8 aspects of the bride's life.  Every phrase is a poetic divine romance that aims at the heart in a specific way.  These 8 virtues are reflections of the Lord's beauty imparted to us and they make Jesus glad as we love Him in these ways.  These 8 virtues will make our hearts glad too.  Jesus began in verse 1 with "How beautiful you are my darling! Oh how beautiful."

Jesus is calling those things that are not as though they are~ releasing confidence to the bride.  The terms He uses are in language of agriculture that the Shulamite is familiar with since she tended goats and kept vineyards.  Each of these symbols is interpreted in Scripture.  Always go to the Word to figure out what the Word says.

"You have dove's eyes behind your veil,"  SoS 4:1
  • Eyes speak to spiritual insight.  Paul spoke of the eyes of our understanding (Ephesians 1:18).  Seeing was Paul's first priority because seeing is the doorway to growing spiritually.  When we see differently, then we feel differently.
  • Dove's eyes speak of purity and loyalty.
  • The veil signifies that her secrete life in God is private and sacred.
"Your hair is like a flock of goats, going down from Mount Gilead,"  SoS 4:1
  • The bride's hair spoke to her dedication to God~ the hair of the Nazarite was an outward sign of their consecration or dedication (Numbers 6).
  • Paul spoke of a woman's hair as showing forth her glory and dedication to God's authority (I Corinthians 11:5,6,15)
  • The goats on Mount Gilead were abundantly fed.  It was a fertile area with bountiful places where goats were known to eat in abundance.  She is well fed on the love of God & the Word of God.
"Your teeth are like a flock of shorn sheep, which have come up from the washing, every one of which bears twins, and none is barren among them,"  SoS 4:2
  • Teeth speak to the ability to chew on the meat of God's Word and to receive nourishment
  • Her teeth are strong, abundant & effective
  • To bear twins means fruitfulness~ her ministry impact is fruitful without spiritual barrenness
  • The washing symbolizes the Word washing us (Ephesians 5:26)
"Your lips are like a strand of scarlet..." SoS 4:3a
  • Her lips speak of speech
  • Her words being like a scarlet strand speak of words that bring redemption to others
  • Scarlet strand is symbolic of God's redemption from the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 9:19, Joshua 2:21)
  • Her speech is wholesome, encourages others and edifies (Ephesians 4:29)
"Your mouth is lovely..."  SoS 4:3b
  • Song of Solomon 1:2 introduces the mouth ~ refers to intimacy with God
  • Our communication with God is lovely to Him
  • The Lord delights in the communication He has with us.
"Your temples behind your veil are like a piece of pomegranate..." SoS 4:3c
  • Temples (cheeks) reveal one's emotions.  The Hebrew word for temples can be translated as countenance or cheeks. We see joy, anger, gladness or sadness on the cheeks. They are windows to our emotions.
  • Her godly emotions were like a sweet pomegranate.  They were sweet to God. The pomegranate was a common fruit in Israel, which was sweet to the taste.  They were represented on the high priests robe, which spoke to fruitfulness.
"Your neck is like the tower of David, built for an armory, on which hangs a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men..."  SoS 4:4
  • A person can be "stiff-necked" or submissive (represents a person's will)
  • When a king put his foot on the neck of a conquered enemy, it symbolized their submission
  • The bride's will is like the heart of David who set his heart steadfastly before the Lord (Psalm 57:6)
  • David's towers were strong & high & effective for defending the city of Jerusalem
  • The armory stored weapons for war~ it is like having a storehouse of weapons against the enemy's kingdom
  • A buckler was a small round shield worn on the arm & 1000 shields speak of the abundant protection against the enemy (Ephesians 6;10)
  • The bride's will is like the shields of 1,000 skilled warriors which were proven in battle
  • Our unwavering resolution to obey Jesus is an essential aspect in our spiritual victory.
"Your two breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle, which feed among the lilies..."  SoS 4:5
  • Breasts speak of the ability to nurture; nourishing others as a mother nourishes her babies
  • Fawns are youthful animals...speaks of the milk of a young mother that does not run dry
  • The twins speaks of a double portion or double ability to nurture others
  • This Shulamite's ministry is likened to those which feed among the lilies which speaks of purity~ feeding the young in purity

Jesus tells His bride, "You are all fair (beautiful), My love, there is no flaw in you,"
SoS 4:7.

He has called her beautiful/fair 8 times already in this song.  In Jesus' eyes, she is ALTOGETHER LOVELY. Seeing how JESUS sees us determines how we think and feel about ourselves!!!!
