Have you ever asked yourself the question, “Why does an all-powerful God need me to pray to get things done?” God doesn’t need us to build His Kingdom on earth but wants us to be a part of the great adventure of overthrowing the kingdom of darkness. Prayer is one of God’s chosen ways to bring heaven to earth. What God is doing around the globe cannot happen without intercessors. Intercessors change the trajectory of history. So what is intercession? Intercession is agreeing with and asking for the will of God to be done in the earth. Jesus taught us to pray, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done...” (Matt 6:10). The goal of intercession is to make the earth like heaven. “...on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matt 6:10) What would it look like for heaven to invade your family? Your church? Your neighborhood? Your school? Your city? Intercession is the bridge between heaven and earth. We, the Church, are the representative authority on the earth. We carry God’s power, His resources, His love, and His desires to a world in need. He has given us, the Church, the power to change lives, cities, events, etc. It is the high calling, privilege and responsibility of His Church. Intercession is rooted in relationship of intimacy with God, our Father. Starting from creation, God has desired to dwell among us. Mankind, the beloved of God was created for relationship with God. When God created Adam and Eve, He placed them in a garden that He planted, a garden that reflected the glory of His Presence. This garden became a place of intimacy with God and with one another. The only things Adam and Eve knew about the world came from God. They enjoyed uninhibited relationship with Him. From the rising of the sun to its setting, they were in intimate connection with God. Adam and Eve were the first intercessors. They had full access to God, encircled by His glory and goodness. This is the highest destiny of man, to be face to face with God. The garden was a place of wonder and interaction. Adam and Eve were to tend and cultivate the garden, which was the place of encounter between themselves and God. Outside the realm of the garden was an uncultured earth and the goal was to expand the Kingdom of God, that Eden would extend all over the whole world. In spite of the fall, God’s desire was for continuous communication with mankind. When Jesus introduced God as Father, He was giving the disciples a new way of relating to God. “Our Father...” in Matthew 6:9 was again establishing this connection between God and His people. Jesus was showing us that God desires for us to know Him in an intimate way. He is the best dad you could ever know. He is unlike any earthly father, even the best earthly daddy cannot compare. The relationship with God speaks of intimacy, security and confidence in who He is. God loves to share His heart with you and as you spend time with Him, you become passionate about His will being done in the earth. We, the beloved ones are the only ones who have access to Him, to know His heart and His passion for the people of the world. The highest value of the Kingdom is relationship. This is the priority of the Kingdom. The Father doesn’t want workers, He wants sons & daughters who will release His Kingdom on the earth. Ask the Father, “What is on Your heart for my family? My city? My neighborhood?” Ask Him, “What does it look like if Your Kingdom was expanded throughout my family? Etc.” From the place of intimacy, cry out, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done.”
