6 Realities of Truth

The Christian worldview is concerned with knowing the truth. When Jesus was standing beside Pilate before his crucifixion, Jesus said, “…the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me,” John 18:37. Pilate retorted, “What is truth?”

Truth is the correct account of reality, which comes from God.  Truth is absolute, constant & true for everyone, everywhere, all the time!

An important question to ask yourself is, Does my way at looking at the world correspond to the world as it is according to God in the Bible? What do you believe is true? What authority has shaped those beliefs?

Paul gives us a strong reason for knowing Truth, “Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth,” Ephesians 4:14 (NLT).

The Christian worldview explains six realities about TRUTH:
  1. Truth exists. It is real. It is not determined by an individual or a majority consensus. Truth exists whether a person believes it or not. Psalm 119:160, “The sum total of all your words adds up to absolute truth, and every one of your righteous decrees is everlasting.”
  2. Truth is knowable. Jesus told his disciples, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”  And as Jesus was getting ready to go to the cross, he encouraged his disciples by speaking to them about the Holy Spirit (the One who Jesus would send when he left earth & returned to heaven).  About the Holy Spirit, Jesus called him “the Spirit of Truth” (John 15:26) and that “when he, the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all truth,” John 16:13.
  3. All Truth comes from God and bears witness to Him. When a person discovers Truth, they are on a path to discover the Creator of Truth.  Paul encourages his young disciple, Timothy, in the book written to him, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work,” 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
  4. Truth is eternal. Truth does not change and it is not created.  Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away,” Matthew 24:35. John relates to us in John 1 that truth has always been, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” John 1:1.
  5. Truth is a person. Jesus said of himself, “I am the way, and the Truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” John 14:6.
  6. The Bible is the final authority on Truth. The Bible functions as a measuring stick, the standard of Truth, and the norm against which human thoughts and ideas are to be tested. All knowledge claims and beliefs must be shaped by the Bible and come under its scrutiny.  The Bible is our plumbline. We are instructed by Paul, in Ephesians 6 (the armor of God section) to “stand firm then, with the belt of Truth buckled around your waist,” Eph. 6:10.

Let’s train our hearts to love God’s Word, trust God’s Word and live by God’s Word. We need the soul-gripping, life-shaping words of Scripture to develop a deep, lasting, and culture-transforming faith.
